About the module:

This module builds on the planned standardised learning disability and autism training and goes into greater depth for staff who have additional responsibilities for the health and care of these patients. Course content has been compiled and approved by a team of experts, including experts by experience and health care professionals.

The module is split into six sessions and takes around 2 hours to complete in total. Some additional time is required to devise and evaluate an intervention case study.

Course sessions:

1. Understanding learning disability and autism and the legislative framework

   • background context for the course

2. The importance of health screening and vaccinations

   • identifying and implementing reasonable adjustments across screening, annual health checks, medication reviews, mental health and wellbeing, sexual health and infectious diseases

3. Health education

   • the importance of health education and health literacy

   • removing barriers and supporting people to understand and manage their own health

   • talking about death and dying

4. Planning in advance for contact with health professionals

   • why preparation is so important and practical steps

5. Explaining some health conditions

   • how to identify and use wordless stories relevant to specific health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, epilepsy and depression

   • video case studies about using Beyond Words resources

6. Putting learning into practice: See one, do one, teach one

   • designing and reviewing an intervention using what you've learnt in the course

You don’t need to complete the whole course in one sitting. Your progress will be saved, meaning you can break and return to it as many times as you need, whenever suits you.
