Uckfield book club have celebrated their first birthday in style gaining some coverage in the local press. Volunteers Stuart Gill, Katie Scott-Wilds and Diane Davis have been running the Beyond Words Book club at Uckfield library for over a year now. They celebrated the success of the book club, plus the achievements of a number of members who completed their ’12 book challenge’. The certificates were presented by Cllr Louise Eastwood, Cllr Chris Dowling, Cllr Colin Belsey and Stephen Potter, which made for a very special occasion indeed.
We are immensely proud of all involved and it’s wonderful to see the success of yet another Beyond Words Book Club. After the recent Citizenship Award, received by our Kent clubs, we have seen a real boost in interest and we hope this positive example inspires you to set up your own or find out more. As with our other groups the club have started writing their own stories. We have helped bring this co-creative production to life with our new Picture This project, where three book clubs across Kent have created 3 short books, which will all receive a limited print run this spring.
In order to continue the success of our book clubs and to see people celebrated, as we have in Uckfield, Kent and beyond – we need libraries, volunteers and self-advocates to get involved with setting up book club within their local community. Head over to our training page as we have Book Club Training on 18th March, which is a perfect way to get started.
