We look forward to the launch of two new titles in the Books Beyond Words series. 'Rose Gets in Shape' and 'Going to the Dentist' focus on specific areas of risk for people with learning disabilities; obesity and oral health. Both are major risks for people with a learning disability, where the prevalence of both is much higher than in the general population. Risk factors, such as poor diet, lack of self-care and social exclusion are common causes of weight problems and poor oral health. These books will help dismantle some of the barriers that stop people accessing public health education and primary care and preventative services.
Rose Gets in Shape tells the story of a young woman whose doctor tells her that her weight is causing health problems. She decides to get in shape and the book follows Rose through her weight loss journey, the new activities she takes up, and the good friends and support she finds along the way.
Going to the Dentist is the story of a young man who eats too much sugary food and goes to the dentist after getting a toothache. After having a check-up and receiving treatment, he goes back to the dentist to learn how to keep his teeth and gums healthy. The story gives pictorial examples of a dental x-ray, an injection, drilling and filling, and good oral hygiene routines.
Guidelines and information for professionals and supporters can be found at the back of each book.
The books have been co-created by experts by experience, both people who have a learning disability and other experts in the field, including psychiatrists, dentists, learning disability nurses and special dietitians. In the hands of primary and specialist healthcare professionals the books will provide a tool for education and for adapting care to fit the patient’s needs better.
We will be celebrating the launch of these two books on November 1 at City Lit in Covent Garden. We will be joined by a range of speakers, including Professor Parveen Kumar, Chair of the BMA Board of Science. We are delighted to see the publication of two such important and impactful books.
