Sheila is the founder, editor and lead author of the Books Beyond Words series. She is Emeritus Professor of the Psychiatry of Disability at St George’s, University of London, and sits in the House of Lords as a crossbench peer. Sheila has advised the Government on the development of many initiatives and policies, such as the 2001 Valuing People White Paper, the 2008 Healthcare for All Independent Report and the National Mortality Review. She currently chairs an Expert Reference Group for Health Education England on the health and social care workforce with respect to learning disability. She is a past President and Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and past President of the British Medical Association. She currently chairs the Board of Science at the British Medical Association and is President of the College of Occupational Therapists. She is also a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors (including vulnerable adults).
