Tobias Steed
About:
Tobias Steed has spent his entire career involved in a broad range of media, writing, facilitating and producing in print, stage and now screen. His publishing career started as an editorial assistant at Johns Hopkins University Press while enrolled at medical school. This position made it clear to him that his real interests were to be found in the arts, writing and publishing. After selling a successful US based travel guide company to Random House, Tobias spent a few years as their Director of New Media in New York before being lured back to the UK by Rupert Murdoch's News International. In London Tobias oversaw brand exploitation and new revenue stream development and became well renowned for innovative and creative problem solving. In 1999, he wrote Hollywood Cocktails (Mitchell-Beazley) which has gone on to sell in excess of 300,000 copies in seven languages around the world.
In 2000, Tobias founded Can of Worms Enterprises to pull together his various interests: book publishing, international public health consultancy (for DfiD, working in Nigeria), consultancy for numerous for profit and non-profit organisations, (BBC, Bluffer's Guides, NESTA, The Children's Society, et al), publisher at BookBrunch and just about anything else that catches his fancy. Can of Worms has received a number of awards for its book publications ranging from Radio 4 Food Programme Cookbook of the Year to National Jewish Book Award finalist. Tobias has produced theatre as well as a stint as managing director of FOS Ltd, a UK-based film production company. He stepped down to co-write a screenplay, REVolution, now in pre-production.
Tobias is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts (FRSA), an adjudicator for UNESCO’s global Cities of Literature initiative, a member of UNESCO’s Expert Network and a trustee of Books Beyond Words a charity publishing wordless books to help those with learning disabilities. For his general amusement he has recorded with Andy Cox of The Beat and the Fine Young Cannibals on an ambient jazz album, and is captain of the PG Wodehouse Society cricket team, The Gold Bats.
