Wayne’s story

It has made my life positive and strong and outgoing.

Favourite Beyond Words book: A Good Day’s Work

Wayne is a co-author, book trialler, and helps us tell the story of what Books Beyond Words can do for people with learning disabilities. He helped us create the fantastic book about employment, A Good Day's Work, showing a day at the supermarket he works at.

He told us how his work on the book made him feel:

It was difficult to start off with, but once I got into it, I thought: yeah. It felt special. I felt privileged, I felt proud. I felt pride in what I did. It was great, I loved it.

”My friends and family were extremely proud of what I did. It felt nice. They said: how did I feel publishing the book? I said: I felt absolutely privileged, I felt happy. Yeah, I just felt - happy.
— Wayne

A fantastic speaker and advocate for our books, as well as a proud co-author, Wayne has joined the Beyond Words team at many events and in many different community settings. He told us his favourite part of being part of Beyond Words was:

Getting to know different people, getting to know what they like, what their favourite things are, that’s what I like.

We asked Wayne what is most important about books without words. He said:

It makes a huge difference because people might not understand words, or what’s being said, so I think it’s very important that people will have a good understanding by looking at pictures. It’s a positive step, for people to be able to go to a library and then read a book. Some people might not speak, or might need one to one support, or use sign language to help them.
